Lanzarote is a small island with an enormous sea. More than two hundred kilometres of coastline wrap around it, and no point of the island is far from the sound of the Atlantic. But what makes this coast special is its variety: within a single day you can move from turquoise calm to wild ocean drama.

In the south, hidden at the end of a dirt track through a protected natural park, the coves of Papagayo are the postcard everyone remembers: crescents of golden sand held between volcanic headlands, with clear, calm, shallow water in every shade of blue. It is the gentle face of the Atlantic — perfect for swimming, snorkelling and long, lazy afternoons.

The north coast tells another story. At Famara, a vast beach stretches for kilometres beneath a wall of six-hundred-metre cliffs, and the same trade winds and swells that once isolated Lanzarote now attract surfers from all over the world. Famara's consistent waves have earned the area a reputation as one of Europe's great surf schools: beginners take their first ride on the white water while, on the reefs nearby, experienced riders chase some of the most powerful waves in the Atlantic. Windsurfers and kitesurfers have their own temples along the east coast, where steady winds blow almost all year.

Offshore, the adventure continues. Across the water from Órzola lies La Graciosa — since 2018 officially the eighth Canary Island — a place with sandy streets, no asphalt, and beaches that feel like the end of the world. The channel between the two islands, El Río, is protected by the cliffs and dotted with boats; ferries and catamarans cross it daily.

And the water itself is an invitation: mild all year round, cooler and refreshing in spring, warmest in early autumn. Kayaks trace the coastline, sailing boats lean into the trade winds, paddleboards glide over volcanic reefs. On an island born of fire, it is the ocean that sets the rhythm of every day.
